WASHINGTON – The United States has asked South Korea to pay $ 1.3 billion a year for US troops stationed on the peninsula, a senior administration official said Thursday. Up nearly 50 percent compared to last year.

The new figures represent a decrease from the $ 5 billion the United States initially sought, but almost four times the South Korean increase suggested in its latest proposal.

The official told the Yonhap news agency that the US proposal was "final" and "reasonable."
