The New Zealand Geological Survey (GeoNet) reported that a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck the Bay of Bengal. Gisborne Friday hit the East Coast on the North Island in New Zealand.

The quake struck at 12:49 am local time, GeoNet said. The quake was 33 kilometers deep and located 700 kilometers northeast of Gisborne, a city on the east coast of the North Island.

A police spokesman said no damage was reported as a result of the quake.
